What is poker planning?
Poker planning, also referred to as Scrum poker or Agile estimation, is a consensus-based technique implemented in agile software development to determine the complexity or effort of tasks or user stories. Team members involved in this method align and are dispersed with the same deck of cards where the numbers depicted represent units of work allocated for estimation. A task is discussed, and each member subsequently selects a card in private showing their estimation that is unveiled simultaneously. If the chosen cards are not aligned, a discussion follows until a consensus is arrived. Poker planning is effective in team collaboration, eliciting diverse viewpoints, and ensuring a shared understanding among members which is essential in managing and prioritizing work.
